Mario Party Legacy

Week 31: Super Smash Bros. Official Site Updates

The official website for the two upcoming Super Smash Bros. titles is once again making updates on a regular basis. Similar to the Super Smash Bros. Dojo for Brawl, the official website will post images from both games five times a week. Whether this means we get announcements and characters reveals is still up in the air, but rest assured that new content is always coming your way. Keep checking back to this post as we update everything that is released for this week! A new post will be made for the next week.

Monday, January 13

King Dedede uses one of the strongest side smash attacks in all of Smash Bros. Use this attack wisely in battles.

Tuesday, January 14

Rosalina and Luma’s attacks are very different. This screencap shows Rosalina producing a Saturnian ring for her strong up attack.

Wednesday, January 15

Who’s the girl next door, living in the haunted mansion? You’d better learn my name because it’s…

Thursday, January 16

A group shot of the big guys. How much bigger are they compared to Mario?

Friday, January 17

Don’t miss your chance, Zelda–King Dedede is knocked out.

Zelda: “Ah–soft and squishy.”

A veteran of the Forum, you'll probably know me as H-J (Kaabii) or 8B1T. My main role on the website is as an assistant editor. My favorite Nintendo franchises are Mario, Kirby and Legend of Zelda, though I do have fleeting moments of entering fandoms beyond the Big N (mainly Japan only stuff).

Sakurai posted a second image in the comments of Friday’s post. It’s the same image but maybe a few seconds after or before the first image.

  • MagiKooper

Does anyone else get the wrong idea when Zelda says that……….and if it referencing something than I am incredibly thick….I really don’t know what’s going on here.

    • SuperZambezi

Well… If it helps, Zelda is squeezing DDD’s nose in the second image.

      • MagiKooper

Ohhh…..O_O how did i not notice that….I saw her other arm at the side, i really didn’t notice her other arm.

  • Braystar

U know what’s funny, most comments are about the witch!

  • koopa 27

i really want Ridley in the game

    • Braystar

Well he could be a boss(?) or obsicle or something, but not a fighter ’cause:
      1. He’s WAY too big
      2. I have never seen him walk
      3. He just is never been playable before

      • BlooperLover

Well, size doesn’t matter. In Melee’s Opening, Ridley was shrunk down to around Samus’ size. Even though he has never been playable before, he still has a shot in being a fighter. You never seen him walk? Maybe in this new smash, you will finally see him walking!

        • Braystar

Look, while most people want Ridley, he is a very unlikey smash character, just telling the truth. IF he IS IN THE GAME AS A PLAYABLE FIGHTER I’ll sell all my Mario games… maybe.

      • Cole Holbrook

Bowser is gigantic in some games… But they scale him down. And Olimar is about an in tall. I don’t think Ridley would be a good fit but size is NOT a reason. Also, Wii Fit Trainer has never been playable. I just thinks your reasons are pretty weak…

        • Braystar

Look, Bowser is a bit taller than Mario and Olimar IS resized like U said, just Ridley is GINORMUS! Oh and WFT is just in here for a different play style. TRUE FACT!

      • Name

        1. Olimar is like two inches tall and Bowser is generally at least three or four times Mario’s size, in some games even bigger. This is not a canon game, meaning Sakurai can do whatever he wants to make characters work. Weak reason.
        2. He walks in a lot of the Metroid games, and like I said, Smash doesn’t follow canon. Weak reason.
        3. Ganondorf, Sheik, Wii Fit Trainer. None of them were playable before Smash. Very, very weak reason.

Ridley should be in. Metroid is a very popular series, and has had a relatively recent game, unlike Star Fox, who had three reps, while Metroid had one, and Ridley is a very complex character and the second most important in the series, behind Samus, obviously.

        • Braystar

Well, I onestly think that in Melee and Brawl Ridley would of been playable by now?

          • BlooperLover

Um No. I would still think he would still not be playable. There are many characters that haven’t yet appeared in the Smash Series Yet, that are wanted.

          • Braystar

LOOK AND READ MY TEXT, RIDLEY ISN’T GOING TO PLAYABLE ‘TILL 3131! AND EVEN THEN THAT’S UNLIKELY!

          • BlooperLover

            -_- Really.

          • Braystar

            Shut up.

          • BlooperLover

          • Braystar

            Same as above ^

          • BlooperLover

-_- (This face? Your telling a face to shut up?)

          • Braystar

            Yep.

          • Braystar

            No, U are.

          • BlooperLover

Depends on how you think of Dumb. Like am I dumber then a 8th Grader or dumber then your sentence.

          • Braystar

I AM AN 8TH GRADER SO THAT’S NOT FUNNY GO AWAY STOP COMMENTING!

          • Braystar

That’s ok, the school near my Mum’s school (who’s ma teacher) said I was ‘out of zone’ yet I don’t have my own house!

    • hi

he will problably appear on pyrosphere

    • Sea Slug and Wagashi

The biggest problem with Ridley is that he’s a flight-based character.

  • Luigiguy567

Wow, this smash looks promising. The stages, Items, and assist trophies are awesome, and this is currently the only smash where I’m happy with the entire roster. (Minus Toon Link, but if they alter him and his moveset a bit, I’ll be fine with him.)

  • T0blet

I agree, I love the entire roster at the moment. If this was the the final roster (the 21 currently confirmed characters), I wouldn’t complain, like, at all! :p

Anyway, I have a wishlist, and if even half these things were to somehow happen; it would be the best game of all time for me personally, even though I’m already loving it.

    Return of:
Yoshi, Pokefloats (Melee), Temple (Melee), Bridge of Eldin (Brawl)

    New Stage:
    The Comet Observatory

    Newcomers:
    -Rosalina (Confirmed :D)
-Chrom/Lucina tag team or just Lucina (Fire Emblem)
    -Palutena (Kid Icarus)
    -Tom Nook (Animal Crossing)
    -Shulk (Xenoblade)

But yeah, I only hope half this stuff will happen. :p

    • Cole Holbrook

YESSS TOM NOOK. And Pokefloats πŸ˜€

      • Luigiguy567

I agree with Pokefloats, but I highly doubt the roster will reach 35. Probably 30 or 32, but not 35.

        • T0blet

Well, let’s see. I’m going to analyse previous smash rosters to see who are the shoo-ins. I will then add them to the total number of currently confirmed characters. For the sake of being incredibly pessimistic, I won’t even add characters that are likely, only ones that I’m almost 100% sure are returning.

We already have 21 confirmed characters. I think we can agree that all the original 12 will definitely return. This includes Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, Yoshi and Ness. This brings our total to 25.

In Melee, Ganondorf is an obvious choice. Many seem pretty confident that G&W (unique and reps his own franchise) and Falco are returning (and if not Falco, at least Wolf from Brawl because starfox will get at least 2 reps). This brings the total count to 28. I left ice climbers out just because of Sakurai’s statement of struggling to fix the ‘two characters’ thing, even though Rosalina & Luma already prove it can work.

Of Brawl, the two characters I’m VERY confident are returning are Wario (can’t have Ashley as an assist if Wario isn’t even a character…) and Diddy Kong (to be revealed on tropical freeze’s release). Also Metaknight, and Lucas are likely choices, but again I won’t count them cause they aren’t quite shoo-ins.

Already we’d be at 30 characters counting shoo-ins alone. This isn’t even including any other character that may even have a remote possibility, AND before we’ve even seen all the newcomers. Yeah, I stand by my estimate of at least 35-40 characters.

          • Luigiguy567

Sakurai did state there would be less characters than in Brawl early in development. This could have changed, but not THAT much. Obviously, the original 12, Wario and Diddy are coming back, so that’s 27 characters. Ganondorf and Mr. Game and Watch are kinda iffy.

Ganon will likely be replaced by Yuga or Ghirahm anyways. So that’s possibly 28 or 29. Ice Climbers and Meta Knight may have a chance, too, but not a very big chance. Also, Lucas, Falco, and Wolf are very unlikely, sense Sakurai stated he didn’t want too many clones, and Luigi and Toon Link are already confirmed.

So I guess we could say that’s about 30 characters? Plus a few newcomers and Unlockable veterans being kept under wraps until the game releases. So maybe that’s about 30-35 characters. The chance of more than 35 characters is VERY low. I know the 3DS is almost as powerful as the Wii, but it has it’s limits.

          • T0blet

Nah, Ganondorf is safe. He’s been there since Melee, and is, and will always be Zelda’s biggest Antagonist. to be replaced by a one-off villain would be an insult. :p It would be like Antasma replacing Bowser, could you imagine? :p But I can see how G&W could be seen as iffy.

I really think Starfox fans would feel cheated if their franchise suddenly dropped from having 3 representatives to having just one. Nah, too dramatic. Likewise, Pokemon won’t get less than four because the franchise is so huge. Pokemon trainer is a good and unique representative, even if Red doesn’t return, he can easily be replaced by the Kalos trainers. Mewtwo is also heavily contemplated by many to be a returning veteran, so he could simply replace Lucario again. But I really don’t see Pokemon dropping back to three.

But even if they did decide to have a roster of 30 characters, who do you think are the ones to be cut?

          • Cole Holbrook

You guys have made good points but I am still sticking to at least 35 fighters. The 21 we have plus CF, Jiggs, Yoshi, and Ness is 25. Game and Watch, Diddy, and Wario is 28. I think Ganondorf and Falco will return making 30. Out of Ike, Lucas, Lucario, ROB, Wolf, Snake, Meta Night, Pokemon Trainer, and Ice Climbers I am sure two will return. (I’m guessing Meta Night and Ice Climbers but I could see PT returning as well.) So my count is at 32. Now we already have 4 newcomers. I think 3 or 4 more newcomers is likely making 35/36 total. (Not to mention Sheik and Zero Suit Samus)

          • T0blet

There we go, looks like it will hit 35 after-all. :p

          • MagiKooper

            22: Wario

            23: Dixie or Diddy Kong……..

            24: Yoshi

            25: Jigglypuff at some point

            26: Ness

27: Mewtwo, so many fans want him….Final Smash better be a random mega-evolution either of Mewtwo X or Mewtwo Y.

28: Captain Falcon……unfortunelly, I don’t like him for some reason, he’s based of a random race character. No history, no story, no epic quest or adventure…just racing.

29-34: Newcomers or returning characters…..if Ganondorf returns they can at least change his moveset so he won’t feel like a clone of Captain Falcon…

          • Sea Slug and Wagashi

I think the F-Zero manga (Or was it a comic?) heavily influenced Captain Falcon and I think even his plane originated from there.

          • Cole Holbrook

My cut personal cut list would be: Snake, Wolf, Ike, and ROB. If I add who I think will be cut: Lucas and Lucario.

          • Luigiguy567

            That’s my exact cut list.

          • Luigiguy567

Good point with Antasma. My cut list is right below.

          • Cole Holbrook

My guess is that without a Subspace Emissary type of mode that will free up a lot of space. Also idk how much this takes up but since 3DS can’t support multiplayer(on one divice) that might give it more room. I can’t wrap my mind around having less than 35 for some reason. (I would probably still love it just as much oddly enough though)

          • Luigiguy567

            Oh yeah, forgot about subspace.

          • T0blet

Was it confirmed it can’t support multi-player?

          • Cole Holbrook

Well I mean with Wii U there are 4 controllers with the 3DS it’s just the 3DS

          • T0blet

            Oh, well yes. xD

I’m just excited to see what modes the game will offer.

          • T0blet

Don’t quote me on this, but I think Sakurai just said he didn’t want to make the cut-scenes anymore because people would just upload them to YouTube, defeating the ‘reward’ system of the SSE. I still think an adventure type mode is possible, just without cut-scenes.

      • T0blet

I know. πŸ˜€ Tom Nook is often overlooked because Animal Crossing already has a representative, but honestly it’s one of the most popular franchises and definitely deserves two. Personally I think that the first trailer hinted at Tom Nook’s inclusion because he picked up villagers dropped invitation.

Pokefloats. The memories. The nostalgia. *drools*. Honestly, I would set 99 stock per character and have hour long battles because it was so fun. :p

But at this point, I doubt we’ll get any less than 35 characters. We’re already at 21 confirmed, with many virtually guaranteed veterans yet to be confirmed (Ness, Captain Falcon, Yoshi etc.), and inevitably more hidden newcomers. At the moment, characters seem to be revealed more frequently and we don’t even have a release date yet! I think the likely estimation is that the game will have 35-40 characters. People do tend to forget that the 3ds is about as powerful as the Wii, the only thing that does worry me is that Sakurai has already said (but months ago) that he plans to make the roster about the same size as Brawl to make sure all characters are as balanced as possible, and I’m sure the game isn’t being rushed. :p

    • Luigiguy567

Yes, Pokefloats is a must! Also, I love the roster so far, but once Ness, Captain Falcon, Wario, and Yoshi are announced, I won’t complain even a little. However, I have hopes for three more newcomers:

      1. Llyod Ivring
      2. Chrom
      3. Mewthree (a.k.a. Mega Evolution Mewtwo.)

    • Sea Slug and Wagashi

Am I the only the only one not satisfied at all? I would die if there were only 4 newcomers, the majority of my favorite characters are not confirmed, it would be a shame if there weren’t any more stages, stickers aren’t back, there are barely no items or trophies, what ever happened to these:
      1. “Sakurai has revealed that one feature of the 3DS Smash Bros. title will be that players can improve their character through battles and rewards, then transfer them to the Wii U Smash title to play against friends.”
      2. “He said the 3DS title is intended to offer a new experience for veteran Smash Bros. fans, and that neither the 3DS game nor the Wii U game would simply be sequels like Melee and Brawl were, and that they’d do more than just add characters and stages.”
      3. “It has also been revealed that they are looking towards co-operative play for the Wii U title.Official Nintendo Magazine said “there is merit in having skilled and
unskilled players play together, so one emphasis will be on elements of
      players helping one-another”.
      4. http://www.ssbwiki.com/images/a/a7/SSB4_whiteboard.jpg
      5. “Sakurai also stated that the short movies for introducing new
characters, including Mega Man, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer, will be
viewable without having to be unlocked.”,
none of the stadium games are back, no sign of events or palette swaps (in the end, that Dedede thing seems to be the lighting,) there are no bosses confirmed, we don’t know of any modes apart from VS mode, and I am starting to get tired of typing but know that there SO much more that I didn’t list!

      • T0blet

It’s as if you don’t realise that the game probably isn’t releasing until Summer 2014, and could even get pushed back even further! :p. In the lead up to the game, we only get small glimpses of the game’s content, not everything at once!

Of course these won’t be the only four newcomers. Everyone is expecting at least two more, and there’s absolutely no way would they show all newcomers months before, especially when hype for the game needs to be at its optimum level around 1-4 weeks before the game is released, to increase sales.

A lot more stages will be announced in good time. For example, we only learned of the Rainbow Road 3DS stage just 2 weeks ago! Likewise, the confirmation of trophies only just happened two weeks ago as-well, so there’s no need to make a hasty conclusion that stickers aren’t returning.

Stickers, trophies and assist trophies are probably the last things to implement anyway which is why it’s taken so long for information of these features to finally creep in. Heck, I’m sure they’re still working on most of these as we speak! Gotta make sure the game-play is right before focusing on add-ons, right?

And it’s no surprise modes have not been revealed as they’re still likely to be incomplete. (When was The Subspace Emissary announced for Brawl?). Oh and by the way Alternate Costumes may aready be confirmed in the form of Male Wii Fit trainer.

Also looking at the SSB4 whiteboard, it does sort of confirm certain features. Notice how Luigi’s pose is exactly like his artwork. Notice how Marth had already received his redesign. This is further evidence that the already likely veterans Metaknight, G&W, Wario and ZSS (with her Brawl design too :D) will return, along with the other shown items.

But yeah like I said, we don’t even have a hint at when the game will be released, meaning it still has a long way to go. There’s still a lot to be revealed, and I’m sure we’ll be exploded with information around a month before the games release (like Super Mario 3D World.)

By the way, do you have a source for the first three points?

        • Sea Slug and Wagashi

I was under the impression that you were like: “If the game were released RIGHT NOW I’d be fine.”, so then I was like: “NO YOU ARE CRAZY!” πŸ˜›

My source is http://www.ssbwiki.com/Main_Page (http://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros._4) – always has been, always will be – and I’d be stunned if there was uncredited info on there.

SSE was hinted July 20th 2007 (you know Sakurai :P) and fully unveiled August 3rd 2007.

          • T0blet

Well, all I said is I’d be happy if this was the roster considering I like all confirmed characters, dislike no-one and Rosalina is my most wanted newcomer and will be my new main. I never mentioned I’d be happy with the lack of content. :p

The Mario Wiki information is interesting, but there’s three important things:
            1) The Wiki is written based upon speculation, and much of what is written comes from unreliable sources. It can’t always be trusted.
            2) The paragraph you copied and pasted from in under the section ‘Pre-trailer’; the information is about a year old (and possibly even older) and is therefore outdated.
            3) It doesn’t help that any of the aforementioned features haven’t been talked about during the large period of time since, meaning that the ideas could have easily been scrapped by now. That’s not to say they can’t still happen, however.

About SSE, that’s not terribly surprising I guess. It’s likely this game will release in Summer 2014 in June, July, August or could get pushed back further. There’s still plenty of time to reveal such features, and will probably be revealed in a Direct. Considering Rosalina was only just revealed in December, January’s direct won’t be that big I don’t think, so the next opportunity would be February, which sounds about right. If not, it’s likely they’ll want to try and reveal a significant chunk in E3 2014.

          • Sea Slug and Wagashi

Okay, but about the wiki – point one is like, totally off. Any speculation is eradicated, which often leads into fights between editors. Wait, hold the phone. Mario Wiki? That was from SSB wiki. I’ve recently gotten more familiar with the latter. Hold on…. Let me check a few things…. Okay, so MW says that speculation should simply be “avoided”, so I think their rules are less strict; SSBW however, has a ten line paragraph explaining why speculation is stupid and their already super strict rules are even stricter for unreleased games, like SSB4. All major pages about unreleased games are immediately semi-protected and minor ones need a bit of attention first. Oh, and they usually do a good job with their sources. This particular one was from the Official Nintendo Magazine. (http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/27806/smash-bros-wii-u/3ds-how-theyll-work-together/)

            …it’s still old tho………………..

          • T0blet

Striving to reduce speculation does not automatically mean it doesn’t exist in the pages of any Wiki though; that’s where the unreliability lies. Besides, editors are just humans full of their own biases etc. and that’s also where the unreliability lies. Only truly reliable information will come directly from Nintendo themselves.

          • Sea Slug and Wagashi

All I know is that’s a bit more reliable than you think. I would put my trust in it.

    • Boo3DarkBoo

I like the actual roster too, but Yoshi has to return. He’s my favourite character of all the smash bros. games. About the stages I like to see Bridge of Eldin too and Summit (Brawl). I have a newcomers wishlist too:
      *Chrom (Fire Emblem)
      *Professor Layton (Professor Layton)
      *Oshawott (PokΓ©mon)
      *Blaziken (PokΓ©mon)
      *Tingle (The Legend of Zelda)
      *Bowser Jr. (Super Mario)
You have good list, in my opinion, and I like you new profile pic. πŸ˜‰

      • T0blet

        Thanks. πŸ™‚

  • Cole Holbrook

Here is a wacky idea: a while after the games have been out Nintendo releases DLC for Smash. (It could only be for Wii U for power reasons) The DLC includes a few of the best stages from past entries in the series as well as all of the cut fighters. Maybe release the likes of Dr. Mario, Roy, and Lucario for free with a stage from each game. Then charge a few bucks for more packages with Young Link, Pichu, ROB, and Wolf and some more stages. (This is assuming ROB Wolf Lucario are cut and Mewtwo is already in as a returning fighter :D) Or it could all be free. It is probably 1% chance of happening but we can dream!

    • MagiKooper

Nintendo would never do that……..putting DLC just for WiiU version of Smash would be wrong and completely unfair to 3DS user……I agree they should put a character or 2 that would be exclusive for the system copy, but not give a bunch of characters, stages, and other cool items or events to the WiiU version and leave the 3DS in the dark,.,..Besides….Young Link really………we already have Toon Link….Young Link would most likely play the exact same.

      • Some Guy

I think he meant both versions get DLC…

      • Cole Holbrook

I know it will never happen but I would love to have all the cut characters back :]

    • Sea Slug and Wagashi

Nintendo tends to make DLC only when a game sells bad/when Shigeru Miyamoto is excited.
