When it comes to first time showings, the Super Smash Bros. games are some of the most exciting and highly anticipated to look out for. One of the most important and most intriguing parts of the reveal comes down to the playable characters that are revealed to return, or newcomers that are joining the brawl. As we anticipate the next Super Smash Bros.’s upcoming reveal in the coming months, let’s take a look back at the characters initially revealed whenever a Smash Bros. game was announced.

Super Smash Bros. [N64]

The reveal of the original game on the Nintendo 64 didn’t receive quite the same attention normally given to a Smash Bros. game, simply because this was the first time the series was making any kind of news in the gaming world. Unsurprisingly, the list of characters revealed included almost all of the characters in the entire game. They included:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Peach
  • Wario
  • Donkey Kong
  • Yoshi
  • Samus Aran
  • Captain Falcon
  • Kirby
  • Fox
  • Link

What’s interesting is that two characters that were initially announced ended up not making it into the game at all. Peach and Wario were absent from the first game, and the inclusion of Luigi in the list clearly shows that the final roster was still being played with at the time of the announcement. Images and videos were not accompanied by the announcement, so it will be hard to look at this situation in relation to the one we should receive in the coming weeks, something that is guaranteed to show us some kind of media.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

After the critical success of the original game on the Nintendo 64, the announcement of Super Smash Bros. Melee was accompanied by wild excitement and a roaring crowd. Don’t beleive me? Take a look at the video below.

It’s clear Nintendo knows that popularity of the series, and that is why there is a huge emphasis on the characters in the video. Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Ness, Pikachu, Sheik, Bowser, Captain Falcon, Fox, Samus, Link, Shiek, Ice Climbers were all seen in the video and in the official announcement on the same day. For this announcement, Nintendo decided not only to show off the entire intro, but also revealed all the starter characters, leaving the unlockable characters as the only secrets. You might be wondering why Nintendo went all out with this announcement. At this point, Melee was already far in development, so these characters were not only ready to be revealed, but there was the assurance that plenty of secrets and unlockables remained. The game was released just six months after its announcement.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Unfortunately for Brawl, things weren’t as far in development as many would have hoped for. Skipping on showing any gameplay, Nintendo released a teaser trailer that showcased several returning characters, as well as five newcomers. Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby were confirmed, with Pit, Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus, Wario, and Solid Snake joining as the new guys.

It was mix of old and new that acknowledged some of the existing characters that are expected, and exciting the fanbase with new and noteworthy additions. While the teaser trailer only revealed nine characters, Brawl ended up featuring an impressive cast of 25 different playable characters. Many of the characters were slowly revealed through the Smash Bros. Dojo, but we still don’t know if this will return for the next Super Smash Bros. game for the Wii U and 3DS. Brawl was released nearly two years after the initial announcement.

Super Smash Bros. 4 [Wii U/3DS]

So what can we expect from the next Super Smash Bros. reveal that is hitting in the coming weeks? My guess would be placed on something similar to that of the Brawl reveal. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS officially started development last June, and with the game being withheld from being playable at E3 while Mario Kart and Super Mario are, things don’t look so good on a release any time soon. Nintendo is going to have plenty of time to release more information as we wait for the game’s release, so information that is revealed will be informative and exciting, but kept at a low level.

For starters, Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby will appear just as they did in the Brawl reveal. I would also expect Samus and Fox to appear, simply because we won’t have a newcomer like Zero Suit Sames, as well as the fact that these two will look gorgeous on the Wii U. With six veterans shown off, I would also expect four newcomers to appear. Two would come from completely new series with the other two coming from existing series. Takamaru and Little Mac? Tom Nook and Krystal? The newcomers can be any character, really, but I would expect to see characters all together.

Who do you think will be first shown during the announcement for the next Super Smash Bros.? Which veterans will they show, and any guesses at newcomers? How do you think the two versions of the game will have an impact on who is revealed? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments below!

    Super Smash Bros Universe!!!! :D

    • http://twitter.com/Xurvhd1 Dhruv Rajyagor

That would fit the “U” in Wii U. “U”niverse :D

  • http://twitter.com/mjpingram Michael Ingram

I think Bayonetta could very realistically appear in this game as a sign of goodwill between Nintendo and PG. I also expect either Takamaru of Little Mac to appear as a retro character.

    • anony

I agree Takamaru and Lil’ Mac should appear as retro character since Sakurai, keeps with constistensy. i might think project 101 character might be appearing or namco character

  • Gameguy1996

The trailer will start off with Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu. Pit and Samus will also be shown.

As for newcomers Little Mac, Pacman, Takamaru and some new Fire Emblem character are the ones I will go with.

    • http://twitter.com/Xurvhd1 Dhruv Rajyagor

I think a new F-Zero character is long overdue. And hey, maybe they’d announce a new F-Zero game while they’re at it. While I never played any in the series, I do want to try it out. And I agree w/ Pac-Man. I mean c’mon: who has Namco Bandai as a helping company for developing a fighting game that is immensely popular and NOT have a popular character from that company in the game? Also hoping for Megaman, and the returns on Solid Snake and Sonic. I think the latter two characters really helped Nintendo a lot.

      • Vedika

I agree but DKC need eithe K.rool or Dixe kong (from brawl code, research forbidden seven). Pacman is expect to be there, i think he likely to appear somehow and he is a ICONIC figure that should be in.
there could be a tales of series becuase couple reason, 1 director of tales is involved and people demand for tales of series. The most request one is llyod, I hope llyod and pacman maybe both appear, where atleast one could be in roster and if not both in then one will be assist trophy

        • http://twitter.com/Xurvhd1 Dhruv Rajyagor

Agreed. I think the Tales and Pac-Man series fit in this game better than Tekken, despite it also being a fighting game.

Agreed. I think the Tales and Pac-Man series fit in this game better than Tekken, despite it also being a fighting game.

I’m excited for the next Smash brothers. Characters isn’t really my concern. Yoshi is always my main. Ness too, but I’m not sure if he’s returning. I’d love to see Striker Daisy if they decide on any more Mario characters. The Newcomers can be anybody’s guess right now.

The 3DS and Wii U versions may have a character difference like the Pokemon versions.

  • E.Gadd

I feel the most confident about Little Mac(the new hero), Palutena(the new heroine), and Ridley(the new villain) appearing, and I feel like we’ll probably get another obscure character, but predicting who that will be is almost as impossible as predicting Ice Climbers or Zero Suit Samus before their reveals would have been.(I’m talking really out there, like Monster from Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally or something)

If they also decide to have a comical ending to the trailer, I expect Waluigi to show up(maybe to the embarrassment of Wario? :p), and if they decide to hype Pokemon and Melee fans, I expect Mewtwo’s return to be a big deal in the trailer.

In addition to the Nintendo characters, there will probably be one unexpected third party character, but since most of them have been speculated to death and back, I’m going with one everyone automatically accepts as undoable. Familiar music starts playing, everyone freaks out, it’s Banjo & Kazooie! :D

    • anony

@ E.Gadd, i wish this could happen, but I think Mewtwo best kept secert, since he was secert character in melee.

Even though I would like B&K to appear. If nintendo bought their right or Rare then they would he a chance, I would be estatic for them to appear, but it could be a slim chance that to happen and even alot slim for them to be in smash. However someday in future iteration, I would really like GENO from smrpg to appear in smash, he was suggested in japenese blog for brawl. I hope geno had better chances, and SE give nintendo him for future games

  • OhMyToad

With 35 characters on brawl I don’t think nintendo will decide to put in lots of new characters, but I do hope so. A lot of people won’t support me on this one, but I would like to see baby mario & luigi together as new playable characters, kat and anna from the wario ware series, and hopefully ghirahim from TLOZ; skyward sword. ^^

  • Satoru Iwata

The guy from Balloon Fight is a possiblity for a retro revival character.

    • GimpyFish

Speaking of which, Balloon Fighter was about to be planned in Melee between other retro, but ICE Climbers was chosen instead, hope he appear in future, maybe duck hunt dog as a secert retro

  • CM30

I personally suspect we’ll see either King K Rool or Ridley first (popular/well requested characters among Smash Bros 4 fans), then maybe a Kid Icarus character afterwards, and a third party like Mega Man or Pac-Man at the end to cause everyone to freak out. Maybe a retro character like Takamaru or Little Mac will show up in there as well, like Pit did in the Brawl trailer.

That’s what I think will happen. I could still be totally wrong and the trailer ends up being much longer and with many more newcomers. After all, no E3 presentation means Nintendo could use a whole Nintendo Direct for this…

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.johnston.16 Mike Johnston

Mega Man better be one of them!

  • mariofan2000

I don’t think that Universe would be a good name for it because the game is also on 3DS.I was really looking forward to E3 because of this game,Mario Kart,Pikmin 3,3D Mario,Yarn Yoshi,Rayman Legends,Yoshi’s Island 3DS,and many more.Too bad Nintendo’s not gonna be at E3 this year :(

    • miles

They actualy are at e3 this year but they are not having a large presentation, Instead they are having a bunch of smaller presentations.

    • supamawiol0l

Has anyone considered maybe there is gonna be 2 different Smash Bros. games? One for Wii U and one for 3DS? That would be awesome! :D

  • 1056kirby

Why does everyone keep saying Nintendo’s not going to be at E3? They just said they’re having some smaller presentations before the show instead of one big one, there still going to be there. Besides, they already said the new 3D Mario game and the new Mario Kart will be playable there, plus they said SSB4 will be there in some way as well.

    • Gameguy1996

Most people just read the headline.

I still think Iwata will talk more about Smash 4, Mario Kart Wii U, Super Mario Wii U, and other games in a June Nintendo Direct.

  • LegendaryBlade12

Looking back at past games, I can (almost) say for a fact that there is going to be a new mario character, as there have been several new mario characters in each installment. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added Waluigi, Daisy, or even Bowser Jr, but what if they decide to go a little out there? Mario clones are a possibility (considering Dr Mario) so they may go with Paper Mario, or maybe they decide to add onto Yoshi games and add Birdo or the Baby Mario Bros. I’m also hoping, even though it’s not that likely, that they will add some more kirby characters. I mean, come on, give the game some credit. Another thing that wouldn’t shock me is new pokemon additions. Its one of their best selling series, and there’s so much diversity within pokemon alone!

  • hey-ho

    What about Monita?

    • mariofan2000

What could they do with Monita?I think it’ll be interesting as an Assist Trophy but it’ll suck as a playable character

  • mariofan2000

BTW you said there are 25 playable characters in Brawl but this is not the case. There are 35 playable characters in Brawl.

  • AquaYoshi

Well Nintendo released an early art of some of the characters and it seemed like Meta knight, and Olimar(Or Louie) may be returning
